Description

Date Unknown

The old and renovated Pear Tree Cottage in Springpool, off Pemberton Road in Winstanley.  In the early 1960s, it was a quite select restaurant run by Mr. Peter Kay and Miss Brown. Brian Epstein with The Beatles used to dine there.

Springpool used to be the strawyard, sawmill, and workshop for Bankes' estate. Cropper's House, the home of James Cropper the abolitionist, used to be opposite Pear Tree Cottage.

Additional information from Andrew Brown.
Re Pear Tree Cottage, Winstanley, Wigan It was run by Mr Freddy Kay ( NOT Peter !) and his colleague Miss Mil Brown, who was an artist. Mr Kay did "front of house: greetings, serving, wine etc and Miss Brown was the cook.

Cropper House was situated about 20 yds "down the hill" ( ie Springpool ) towards Pemberton Road Looking at PTC from the front, Cropper House was at "2 o'clock" to the right of PTC, about 20 yds down (as I said) and about 10/15 yds in from the roadway, where numbers 14 and 16 now stand( more on the plot of No14,I would think) "Opposite" implies it was across the road where the modern bungalow number 11 is now,on left hand side going up.
