Built c1840 and much used for inquests from the 1840's to 1880's.
James Atherton, the landlord died in 1881 and the licence was transferred to his widow Mary.
Mary was prosecuted in 1884 for selling a pint of whisky not of nature, substance and quality demanded.
The licence was subsequently transferred to her son Richard.
