The terraced row was built in1886 and is typical of the 19th-century housing provided for an increasing population in the area.
The population of Ashton increased from 5,679 in 1851 to over 18,000 in 1901. Many were Irish immigrants working in the local mining and cotton industries.
A Welsh community was established on Bolton Road at Stubshaw Cross where Welsh was widely spoken, where chapels and eisteddfods supported the communities.
