THE ARCHITECT of many historical buildings in Leigh will be honoured with his own Blue Plaque this year (2023).

Born in Atherton in 1852, James Caldwell Prestwich became a well-renowned architect and designed many of the civic buildings we see today.

Studying at Leigh Grammar School, Prestwich was the architect of Leigh Town Hall, Leigh Infirmary, Leigh Cenotaph, Leigh Technical College, the Library on Railway Road, Leigh Public Baths, and the Central Buildings on Bradshawgate.
