Description

Central Hall was built for the Primitive Methodist congregation and officially opened on Good Friday, 8 April 1898.

The building was designed by J. B. Thornley, with construction carried out by W. Thornley. The Thornley brothers later established their joint architectural practice from Powell Chambers, Station Road, Wigan, in 1901.

The project was made possible through significant financial support from W. P. Hartley, founder of Hartley’s Jams.

In the 1940s, the building was purchased by the Elim Pentecostal Church, which continued to use it until the congregation closed around 1976.

Central Hall was ultimately demolished in 1981.
