James Bridge says nothing about the date of construction in his 1955 “History of Golborne” but offers this amusing anecdote about the name: “One old resident remembering past days rather facetiously explained to me that The Signs in the Cellar were the barrels of beer which had the peculiar property of running when approached. Possibly he meant 'broached' but only being a novitiate I preferred not to argue the 'pint' with him”. Etchings on the ground-floor windows indicate that the building was more recently a “Sam's Bar”
