Grade II
Wellington Monument Bispham Hall
Crank Road, Billinge
Description
The Monument was erected in 1816 by brothers Robert and John Holt of Bispham Hall to commemorate the 1815 victory at the Battle of Waterloo.
The inscription on the moment reads:
"TO THE/MOST NOBLE AND ILLUSTRIOUS/ARTHUR/DUKE OF WELLINGTON/AND THE BRAVE HEROES OF BRITAIN AND THE CONTINENT/WHO UNDER HIS AUSPICIOUS GENIUS AND COMMAND/SO GLORIOUSLY ACCOMPLISHED THE DOWNFALL OF/TYRANNY AND THE RESTORATION OF LIBERTY TO EUROPE/ON THE PLAIN OF WATERLOO/JUNE 18th AD 1815"
The Monument was renovated some years ago as the obelisk was leaning extensively. The project was funded by the War Memorial Trust (75%) and the remainder by the Waterloo Memorial Trust.
An interesting document from Historic England describing the renovation project:- Read
