Description

Formally the location of the Cross Keys Hotel, lots of the original terraces still stand however there have been a few that have been replace, one being the Cross Keys Hotel. There are mentions of the Pub dating back 1786 in John Leyland's book Memorials of Hindley in which he describes a boy named Richard Mather who was well-liked by travellers who were the main frequenters of the pub. His father moved the family to Hindley to manage the pub. It was one of only 9 pubs in the area in 1874 as described by John Leyland, the others being, " The Bird i'th' Hand," " The Red Lion," " The Lord Nelson," " The Bull," " The Hand and Banner,"
"The Swan," and " Brown Cow," Hindley Green, and "The King William," Platt Bridge. Some of which are still in operation today. There have been buildings on Chapel Green Road since at least 1844. The end house which was formally the Cumberland Arms was built in 1879.
