Early detached house, good quality original brickwork, from early 19th century

Laurel House, Atherton Rd, Hindley. Built in 1714, home of the Eckersley family, Nathaniel Eckersley most famous for giving the people of Hindley the Library.

Other residents are Thomas Southworth, colliery manager and Chairman of Hindley Urban District Council and in latter years ( and more meaningful to me ) my Grandma and Grandad, Clarence and Anne Barlow.

Clarence ( a miner and herbalist with a love of flowers ) and Annie acquired Laurel House in the mid to late twenties, with a lot of hard work it later became Laurel Nurseries. My mother and her two brothers and sister were young when they moved there, my sister Anne Duggan was born there ( top left hand window) as were four of my cousins.
